Every Central Government department is committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050, by reducing carbon emissions across their estate and scaling up the transition to renewable energy.
Several departments have outlined their own roadmaps to becoming more resilient and sustainable in the face of the challenge presented by climate change:
Ministry of Defence Plans to contribute to the UK’s net zero 2050 target by reducing emissions and scaling up transition to renewables. Project Prometheus has been introduced to invest in renewable energy solutions across the Army.
Ministry of Justice HM Prison Service will be redesigned with emission savings in mind, using heat pumps solar panels and LED lighting to cut carbon emissions by at least 85% compared to prisons already under construction.
Department for Transport Multi-million pound funding has been given to trials of solar used in conjunction with railways, roads and footways.
Department for Education Established a Sustainability and Climate Change Unit to focus on reaching net zero by 2050; becoming resilient to Climate Change; delivering a better environment for future generations; and ensuring citizens are connected to nature.

Installation of the Army’s first solar farm supports net zero ambitions
Spanning approximately four hectares, we constructed the British Army's first photovoltaic solar farm at the Defence School of Transport (DST) in Leconfield - a 2.3MW installation that's predicted to supply one-third of the site's electricity needs.
