Utilise biomethane within your Combined Heat and Power (CHP) strategy, to reduce the carbon impact of your installation and support your net zero goals.
Do you have a CHP project in mind? Are you a large organisation that consumes over 500,000 kWh of electricity and is planning to invest in CHP in the next 12 months? As one of the UK’s leading Combined Heat and Power suppliers and operators, we can install your new CHP and help you to reduce it's carbon impact with biomethane (also known as green gas). Tell us about your project by completing our simple form to get the conversation started.
Biomethane is made from organic matter using anaerobic digestion. At point of use, it can be defined as zero-rated, as all CO2 emitted to the atmosphere has previously been absorbed in the production. This means no new CO2 is being added to the atmosphere. In fact, according to the ISCC, it can be deemed carbon negative in some cases, because you are preventing unabated methane emissions from manures by treating it in anaerobic digestion.
Biomethane has exactly the same specifications as natural gas, so when it's created, it's injected into the nearest mains gas grid and becomes mixed with natural gas from fossil fuels. This means it's not possible to deliver specific biomethane molecules to your CHP to use as a fuel. Instead, a ‘mass balance’ approach is taken. This means that certificates are used to demonstrate the injection and withdrawal of biomethane within the same grid system. This means you can buy biomethane from any producer in any region of the UK, with delivery via the existing gas grid.
If you’re a biomethane or biogas producer who wants to use your product to fuel an onsite CHP, we can help. All our CHP engines can be fueled using green gas (and can even be easily retrofitted to be fueled on hydrogen in the future, too). If you combust biomethane onsite within your CHP, according to most carbon reporting standards, biomethane can be used to offset Scope 1 emissions.
Centrica Business Solutions is a leading Combined Heat and Power supplier and operator, and we have extensive expertise in delivering Combined Heat and Power (CHP) installations that deliver significant cost savings. No upfront capital is needed with our range of financing options, and you’ll be supported by the UK’s largest fleet of CHP technicians to safeguard the ongoing performance of your installation.
We partner with our colleagues in Centrica Energy who provide long-term corporate Gas Purchase Agreements (c. GPA) for biomethane. They handle nomination, transportation, and trading of green gas. They currently manage ~1.5TWh/yr from UK and European biogas plants.
Our sister company, British Gas, may be able to receive sleeved biomethane, which could then be supplied to your business via a standard gas supply contract. This would mean you're getting the full supply chain - from production site to meter point - from the Centrica group.
Biomethane is also known as Green Gas, and it's created from organic matter using anaerobic digestion. Waste (such as from livestock, food or water) or crops (such as sugar cane or sorghum) are processed in an anaerobic digestor. This turns the waste or crops into biogas and digestate.
The biogas is purified, and upgraded into biomethane. Biomethane usually contains more than 97% methane, and it completely interchangeable with natural gas. The digestate isn’t wasted – it’s used as a fertiliser, soil improver, or for livestock bedding.
As a leading Combined Heat and Power supplier and operator, we can help you reach your cost and carbon-saving goals.
We offer CHP units fuelled by hydrogen, natural gas, biogas, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Our units can be built around a range of different small, medium and large-scale engines.
