University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust is saving precious public funds to be recycled into frontline patient care, thanks to its super-efficient, 1.2MW CHP unit and live system monitoring.
Providing services for approximately 900,000 people locally and three million regionally at Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital in Stafford, energy consumption is consistently high for the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. To better manage this, the Trust needed a cost effective energy saving solution with a goal to improve environmental performance and reduce the expense associated with energy generation.
Our role was to install a new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit on the Royal Stoke University Hospital site. We decommissioned and disassembled their old system and installed the 1.2MW CHP unit to deliver greater performance.
The CHP on-board computer provides a two-way communication channel to the service centre. This allows live system operational monitoring so any faults can be quickly rectified.
The CHP is helping reduce the hospital’s CO2 emissions by almost 2,792 tonnes a year. This is almost 8% of the Trust’s current carbon output, and equivalent to the environmental benefit of removing 991 cars from the road.
With mandate to reduce emissions by 80% by 2028, the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust is now well on course to hit their target.
The hospital took out a Premier Plus service contract – a fully comprehensive operation and maintenance package. This means they benefit from a range of services including 24-hour remote monitoring, a dedicated site engineer and all-inclusive parts and labour for the contract term.
This project delivers recurring revenue savings in energy costs. As well as helping to cut carbon emissions and save the environment, all the money saved in energy bills will be redirected to front line patient care.” Charlie Cox, Energy Manager, University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust
