Sustainable healthcare for the North West

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is the main provider of hospital care to approximately 750,000 people in Manchester and Trafford. Needing to replace the ageing energy estate at two hospitals offered an opportunity to reduce costs and cut carbon emissions.

A critical upgrade to ageing energy infrastructure

Centrica Business Solutions installed two new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems at Wythenshawe Hospital and Withington Community Hospital, along with the removal of old boilers. In addition, 9,200 new LED light
fittings were installed, as well as a new Building Management System. The 14-month construction project will replace life-expired infrastructure currently used by MFT at these two hospital sites.

The funding for the £10.9 million project was procured through the Carbon Energy Fund (CEF). The management and maintenance phase involves a 15-year Energy Performance Contract with Centrica Business Solutions that will include operations and maintenance support, with backing from CEF and Macquarie.

The results

The project will deliver a much needed replacement of the ageing and outdated energy systems at two key hospitals in Greater Manchester, helping to unlock energy savings and meet carbon reduction targets. This is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions at two sites by 25 per cent – the equivalent of taking more than 780 cars off the road.

Cost savings from lower energy expenditure will help stretch the Trust’s operating budget, allowing it to focus on healthcare. In addition, the solution improves energy resilience. It creates a more reliable and easier to maintain
system; the adoption of CHP means the Trust is not as dependent on grid supplied electricity.

Sustainable healthcare will help our budgets stretch further and the savings from this programme, alongside the reduction in our carbon emissions, are invaluable.”
David Furnival, Group Director of Estates & Facilities, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust
