Renewable Gas

If you use more than 150,000 kWh of gas with British Gas, you can pay a premium to upgrade to Renewable Gas.

Renewable Gas (also known as biomethane) is made from renewable sources such as leftover food and farm waste. It works just like normal gas made from fossil-fuels, but it’s virtually carbon neutral when burned, making it a greener, more sustainable option for the future. If you're a British Gas customer and use more than 150,000 kWh of gas, you can pay an added premium to upgrade to one of our Renewable Gas products.

Our Renewable Gas options

British Gas offers two forms of Renewable Gas, to help fuel your transition to net zero.

Carbon Neutral Gas
  • 10% of your gas supply will be Renewable Gas, backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin certificates
  • The remaining 90% of your supply will come from VER-certified energy from named carbon off-setting projects around the world
100% Green Gas
  • 100% of your gas supply will come from Renewable Gas that’s produced by biomethane renewable energy generation, backed by Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin certificates
How does Renewable Gas work?
Depending on the option you choose, your British Gas supply will either be will either be 100% Renewable Gas or 10% Renewable Gas combined with 90% carbon offsets to neutralise the remining emissions.
REGGO
Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin

These certify that this amount of gas is from biomethane injected into the grid. It’s also your guarantee that the green gas is authentic and hasn’t been sold elsewhere.

VER
Verified carbon offsetting

A proportion of your supply can be offset by independently verified carbon offsetting projects, which help to counteract the release of greenhouse gas emissions.

Geycek Wind Farm
Carbon offsetting in action
We’re supporting the Geycek Wind Farm Project, a grid-connected wind farm with 70 turbines in Turkey. The project has a 168MW generation capacity, and an estimated annual supply to the grid of 368,800MWh. By utilising renewable resources and displacing carbon-intensive energy, it’s estimated to lower GHG emissions by 222,754 tonnes CO2e annually.
